Lisa Lightman’s paintings are constructions in which states of mind are mysteriously communicated. Decisions made on the blank surface are an attempt to express emotion that may be known or not yet identifiable. While her work is primarily an evolution of the unconscious, it is oftentimes influenced by political or cultural events.
She is intrigued by collage elements of cloth, paper and old photographs. Similarly, many of the paintings involve rubbing, scratching, and removing paint to create texture and layering. Only later does she begin to understand what the final painting might mean.
Lisa lives and works in San Francisco, California.
